Transfer within company - sudden reduction in hourly rate

Hi,

My husband works for Spirit Group and has done for the past year, 3 months he transferred pubs and went from chef to duty manager.

He was paid at the same hourly rate on his first full wage slip from the new pub but this month he has received his wage slip and his hourly rate has been reduced by £0.41 per hour.

He has received nothing in writing informing him of this reduction but has been told verbally today that it is because his hourly rate was higher than the other duty managers in the pub the area manager has stated that his hourly rate needed to be reduced inline with the other employees performing the same role.

I am trying to gain details for the relevant person to write to but just wanted to check my husbands rights first, can they really do this?

Thanks
Sarah
