Cash for scrap metal (fridges, dishwashers etc)

Hi,

Does anyone know how I might be able to make some money from my old fridges and other appliances, I have many appliances knocking about so was hoping I could make a little bit of cash from them.

I am in slough area and have found many scrap yards that take products but don't offer cash or scrap yards that want the metals separated and sorted which is not something I am able to do.

Any help appreciated.

May not get much if anything for fridges and freezers? their doors contain a foam with cfc's in them iirc and these are expensive to recycle as they have to use special machines to capture the cfc's?

Thanks for that, maybe just have to get rid of them for free then.

    Hi,

Fridges have to be disposed of within WEE guidelines which means someone has to pay to dispose of them at the end of their life - be that the council if you use their dumps or a company who takes them away when delivering you a new one to the idea someone would give you money for it is a bit bold,

However - you can trade them in and use them to get good chunk of a new appliance (comment had a deal offering £250 of appliances over £800ish on trade in recently).
If they're still in working order you might be able to sell them see gumtre etc,
Even some damaged goods when the parts are common or the brand is really good can be sold for parts - again i'd say gumtree etc
    Hope that helps

The scrap people in my area take fridges,so there must be value in them!

The reason scrapyards don't like fridges is they have to de-gas them and dispose of the gas in a safe manner. Far be it from me to accuse, but your local scrap man may be degassing them in a less environmentally sound manner.

I don't know what you've got around you, but I sell any scrap I get to my local SIMS yard, they're all over the place so might have one near you.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Here in Colchester, they are happy to take them if they have been de-gassed. Luckily, all the ones I get asked to dispose of (I'm EA licensed for the disposal of waste btw) tend to have been left outside so their pipes have been 'smashed by vandals'.
If you can find a way to seal the pipes by crimping them together (you need to make a gas-tight seal), then you can remove the compressor assembly and dispose of that at the Council waste site.
The best way I found to maximize the income from scrapping appliances is to cut and remove the flex (you only lose 12% in value if you leave the insulation on), copper pipes/fittings, lead pipes, brass fittings, stainless steel components and finally, if you can, remove any electric motors as these are worth more on their own than an entire complete appliance might be.

Also remember to take photo ID with you (a driving license will do) otherwise they will most likely turn you away.
Yards that don't pay cash will normally pay by either cheque or BACS, so make sure you have a Debit card with you just in case.

    NOTE TO MODS.
There is already a thread on making money from scrap. Can you merge the threads together?.
