Hi,

I have installed Avira free anti virus. Is there a way to stop the Avira pop up adverts asking me to buy the "new improved version"?

I found this rather neat solution > http://www.techspot.com/guides/213-remove-avira-antivir-popup-ad/

Unfortunately, I get this message
Unable to save permission changes on avnotify Access is denied

If you get an "Access Denied" error make sure you have administrator permissions. If you are an admin and you still can't block the file, go to the General tab in Avira's settings (Extras > Configuration - or - hit F8)(make sure you have enabled "Expert Mode") and click on Security. Uncheck Protect Windows hosts files from changes and Protect files and registry entries from manipulation. Now you can edit the security properties of avnotify.exe. Remember to reactivate those Avira's security settings to prevent a future antivirus failure.
Before giving up, try setting a restriction on avnotify.dll as well.
In AntiVir 2012 the file ipmgui.exe has to be blocked the same way as explained above for the file avnotify.exe

The trick with the Local Security Policy stopped working some time ago, at least in WinXP. It stopped the ad, but triggered an error message from Windows (can't say which one off the top of my head) which you had to click away. Moved to MSSE instead...

I used to recommend Avira to people and some of them bought it, but I'll not do that anymore. Well done Avira.

I used the registry hack method on my xp machine

Remember to set a restore point first - just in case.

No success with the wife's Win 7 laptop - she says it's not worth the bother.

Did not work for me. :(
An error occured while applying security information to: C:\Program Files(X86) \ Avira \ Anti Vir Desktop \ aebb.dll
    Access denied

Quite irritating when the software which is designed to prevent malware, installs it's own malware.

  • This is one of the main reasons why i stay away from the free versions of AV software. You don't exactly have to pay loads to get decent protection...eg Norton Internet Security suite can be bought for £4 a year. Of course in some cases AV programs which are't usually free can be used for free eg Barclays online users can have Kaspersky licence free but then again i'm not going to change bank just for free AV.

I do not like Norton or Kaspersky. I prefer Avira, each to their own I guess?

Remind me again of the name of this web site :)
We are only talking about saving one mouse click per day at the most.

We agree about not changing to Barclays though.

It is more frequent than that, but I take your point.
