At least they are willing to refund any charges. However a year is stupid could they not try and get the money earlier?!

    It was actually 8 months.

Im sorry but if you OWE someone money you pay them the money you owe them unless you are a thief.
Kicking off about it makes you sooo wrong as at the end of the day they are a business so regardless of how big or small you owed them that money you pay them that money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :exclamati:exclamati:wave:
  • Whenever I've bought anything from Hotel Chocolat, I've been asked to give them my email address to be on their mailing list.

A cynical part of me thinks they could use this story to get more customer's details in future
' As the chocolate retailer didn't have customers' contact details, it couldn't warn them.'

    But, I'm VERY cynical :D

That would be a fun conversation at the till...

"Can I have your email address, please?"
    "Why?"
"Oh, sometimes we don't bother to charge you for your purchases for a year...If you give us your email address, we can let you know when we're finally going to charge you"
    "Oh, great, in that case..."

No, it was actually a year. Do try and read the article (or at the very least, the headline!?) before commenting...

Technically, that's neither from the article, which states
"Some Hotel Chocolat customers have had payments taken from their accounts this month for purchases made a year ago."

    Or from the headline
"Hotel Chocolat customers charged a year late for purchases"

    So I think I'm still safe... ;)

You are missing the point, they have every legal right to collect the money and I don't think anyone has disputed that but to me they have made an error, I would have just written it off as a !!!! up and taken the hit. Not because they are not legally entitled to the money but because it will damage their reputation and make people uneasy about using them in future. Refunding people's bank charges will also eat a fairly large chunk of what money they collect anyway!
If you don't like what I say slap me around with a large trout and PM me to tell me why.

If you do like it please hit the thanks button.

I had a payment come out of my bank from Hotel Chocolate last week when I hadn't shopped with them for some months, so I immediately called my bank as I believed my card had been cloned. I was on holiday too, which left me with no card or money. I called Hotel Chocolate afterwards and to apologise they refunded me the money anyway... All seems a bit silly to me.

    I've been Money Tipped!
All those months ago, how many customers contacted the retailer or bank to say that the expected debit hadn't appeared on their statement? Um? None, I'll bet.

You had the choccies, is it really sooo bad to be made to pay for them?

I don't understand why MSE Helen feels this merits a thread of its own.
