Party games

Just reading through a few of the birthday threads, and dim memories of games I used to play floated through the fog normally known as my brain
Can anyone (most likely who would have been a Brownie or Scout) recall the Port/Starboard game?
Or one where you would all sit in two rows facing each other, with your legs out, something to do with ladders, and every so often someone had to climb (run up) the ladder?
Trying to remember the detail of how they were played - looking for games that will still be under control (hah hah! ) when 30-odd 5 and 6 year olds are playing them.

Port and starboard or North, South, East, West. Corners of the (large!) room named and children run to that corner when it it called out. They will also scrub the decks (scrubbing motion on floor), climb the rigging, captain's coming (salute), admirals daughter (swivel their hips and go whoo-hoo), man overboard (find a partner).
Ladders is played with pairs of children sitting opposite each other with their legs straight out and feet touching. Each pair is given a number and when you call out the number they race each other up the ladder to the end of the room and back to their place Make sure that there is large gap between each pair though, so that they don't get trampled on by over eager kids!
This is the way we play these games at Beavers but I am sure that other people will have their own variations.0 -

This is the way we play them at our Beaver Colony too.
We also have a few other actions for Port Starboard
Cooks Coming Aboard : Pretend to be mixing in a bowl under your arm
"X" in a lifeboat : they have to get into groups of however many you say are in the lifeboat - three, four, etc
Mice on deck : They have to jump about screaming as if the mice are running round their ankles
Submarines : Lie on their backs on the floor with one leg up in the air like a periscope
Bombs overhead : Curl into a ball on the floor with their arms over their heads0 -
Thank you both - It's over 20 years since I last played them, and the details had completely escaped me
How do you finish the games? Are they just played for a set time, or is it one where people are 'out' over the course of the game (like musical statues).

try this one ,
get everybody standing in a circle , legs apart , you will need a light football ,
the idea is to knock the ball thru someone elses legs by hitting the ball with your fist , if the ball goes thru your legs , then u r out , that person then stands up ,
if someone then hits the ball thru an out persons legs then they are out too0 -
Thanks for that one nickj - we'll be outdoors if the weather holds, so that's a good one for then.

We used to love giving parties for our boys when they were young - the kids really enjoyed playing the games - it made a real change from the more costly options of going to a 'venue'.
Some of our best parties took place on fine days outside - 'wet and wild' was one party theme. We built obstacle courses and divided the kids into teams, with each team going through the course in relay fashion. You can include elements such as having to don an outfit partway through the course - then remove it later (and of course the next person will be slowed down if they took it off messily!); performing a task during the course, transporting a container of water or something else messy (like 'It's a Knockout').
When the weather drove us indoors we I can remember one game that is headache-inducing but the kids loved it - again in teams - give each team a large piece of large bubble wrap and get them to jump on it until they have burst all the bubbles - it certainly gets them going!!! :j :j :j (best NOT done after eating!)
Another fun game is to divide kids into pairs or small teams, give them a pile of newspaper and sellotape and get them to make an outfit for one of the team in a set time - best outfit wins.
On a more sedate level, I found this website which has a lot of games categorised and explained - hope it might be of some use to you:

How about Traffic Lights? You need a whistle (to save your voice!!)
Sit kids in fairly large circle facing outwards - give each a colour - Red - Amber - Green. Call a colour e.g. Red - all the kids that are Red - jump up and run clockwise round the circle - blow your whistle once, they change direction and run the other way. Blow your whistle twice and they keep running until they get back to their seat. (You can change directions as often as you want!!) Shout traffic lights and they all get up and run round.
If you want to wear them out this is a great game!!
If you want to end up with just one winner - just make the last child to sit down turn and face inwards until you have a winner.
or..........
Fruit Bowl?
Sit kids in a circle facing inwards give each child a fruit name (choose three fruits Eg. Apple Banana and Pear.)
Call a fruit, and each child who is e.g. an apple jumps up and swaps seats with another child who is also an apple. Repeat with the other two fruits as often as you like. Shout Fruit Salad! and everyone jumps up and swaps seats with another child. You can introduce a couple of rules and say you can't swap seats with your neighbour or whatever.
If you can play this with chairs then you can have one chair less than there are kids and the last one left standing after a swap can call the next fruit!!
Another fairly simple game can be played inside or out - you need two bean bags or soft balls.
Kids stand again in a large circle with the bean bags being held by two kids on opposite sides of the circle. Saying a simple rhyme or playing some music the bean bags must be passed from kid to kid going in opposite directions until the end of the rhyme or music switched off. At some point the bean bags will cross but the kids will work it out or cross their hands!! Whoever is left holding the bean bags sits down where they are to hold the shape of the circle.
The bean bags move off again in opposite directions - as the children sit down you end up with bigger and bigger gaps that the children must run round to pass the bean bags on. The last two kids can win a small prize if you are giving them.
Hope they make sense!!Expect the worst, hope for the best, and take what comes!!:o0
