What can I do to secure contract?

Last year I went through 5 stages to get a job, was successful only to be told due to budget reasons they could no longer offer the roles.

In recent weeks this company has gotten back in touch, I've had an informal interview and yesterday they told me when the manager is back in on Mon, he will be in a position to formally offer me the job. I don't want to hand in my resignation only for them to do this to me again. My friend was saying to get them to write an unconditional offer to me. Has anyone requested this before? And do you think the company would oblige? I expressed my concern at the interview and both interviewers sympathised. I really like this new company, it's global and offers a great opportunity to work up the ladder as well as funding me for a further qualification and can see myself working there for a long time.

I just don't want a repeat of last time.

Why not wait until the manager is back on Monday and see what he says? Hopefully he will offer you the job, ask him to put it in writing then you can go from there.

They can also withdraw an unconditional offer, so that actually won't help all that much. You should wait until you have the job offer in writing and then take a bit of a leap I guess!

What you need is a 'conditional' job offer and HR department will have to do that.
A conditional offer letter is still good if you are in the process of applying for a mortgage etc and for that you need to show your new income for the additional capital etc etc.

If you are planning to handover your resignation before your unconditional offer letter to arrive- I do not think it has any validitity from a "peace of mind" point of view.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I do not intend to hand in my resignation til I have an offer in writing. Spoken to a lawyer friend and she advises that the letter should state job role, salary and benefits and it's a case of me accepting then. Does everyone agree with this? They want to talk to me next week but just wanted to prepare myself.

That is probably a wise decision. We all take risks in life and resigning without a job offer in hand not the best advice I would give....Unless of course you won the lottery or you are a seasoned self-employed freelancer in your profession with loads of spare cash in the bank.

Just so scared I'll end up without a job. I know it's unlikely it will happen again but if it does I'm not going to beg for my job back.
