    no/poor reference, most probably

technically you are breaching contract, they are unlikely to pursue for this but it has been known

    As above.

To protect yourself against the remote possibility of being sued for breach of contract it would be best to gave a week's notice then call in sick. Given that you can self certificate for a week (and most doctor's won't provide a sick note during that time unless you pay) it is virtually unprovable. In any case, if the working relationship has broken down to that point, you are arguably suffering from stress!

I doubt that they'd make you work it, in those circumstances.

I also doubt they'd sue to recover the week's pay, given the economics.

These days, references tend to just list period of employment, salary and no disciplinary etc, ie minimal to avoid being sued by former employees!

They may simply deduct the 5 days' pay from your final cheque - assuming you're paid in arrears and have salary and accrued holiday pay due to you.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

If youve been there 5 years, another 5 days notice is not going to kill you.

Grow some balls and take some responsibility. Just walking is irresponsible in the extreme.

Respect for yourself and a bit of respect for the company who have given you employment and pay for the last 5 years.

Sorry If i seem angry but Ive been on the receiving end of people walking out and having to do my job as well as theirs,
    Very, very annoying.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Don't you just love it when people on here get on their high horse and ram their supposed morals down the throat of somebody they don't know from Adam!

Neither you, I or anybody else knows what situation the OP faces. S/he tells us that "the working relationship has broken down". They simply asked "whats the worst thing that can happen to me if i dont work my weeks notice?". Does it not occur to you that they must be pretty concerned to come on a forum like this and ask the question?

Three of us have done our best to answer the OP's question without making judgements. You however make offensive suggestions about the OP's anatomy without even knowing their gender!

Little wonder you have "been on the receiving end of people walking out" if you take the same attitude with your colleagues!

The worst that can happen is that your employer could sue you and also refuse to provide a reference (you will have to weigh up the likelyhood of that happening).

As said above, please do not just turn up - if you cannot face going in for the final week then just phone in sick (followed up by an e-mail to your boss of course).

Are you sure it is only a week's notice OP? After 5 years that doesn't sound like a lot, I would have thought a month minimum? Have you checked your contract terms?

It would be one week unless the contract specifies more. It is only notice given by the employer that increases on an annual basis by law (up to 12).

Just go in and make a fair attempt at doing the job. And if anyone gives you grief, don't swear and don't hit them. But otherwise give them a piece of your mind. Just be big and bold and stand up to them. They cannot take your job away so they have no power over you.
