i think they are just checking your identity, we act for lots of companies and never have any of them done credit checks for any candidates, The only time this will happen is if you are applying for a position which requires checks for the FSA. Good luck and please dont worry .

What sector is your job in? It's likely to just be a 'right to work' identity check from the sounds of what your friend said, in which case as long as you are a British or EU citizen / have the correct work permit you'll be fine.

Even if they do a credit check (which they can't do without your permission); they're not doing it to be nosy, just to check for the risk of fraud, i.e. large outstanding debts, lots of defaults, fraud notices, CCJs, etc. As long as you're honest with them, they're usually pretty relaxed. You wouldn't normally need a credit check for a job unless you're working in financial services / the armed forces / the police.

Stay calm, it'll be okay

Just seen it's in financial services, don't panic, you just need to let them know you're situation. They'll only normally be concerned if it turns up something you haven't disclosed or previous fraud. The HR departments deal with looooads of these, don't want you to fail and are usually pretty helpful - let them know your circumstances and they'll recommend how to resolve it to their satisfaction.

well this is the thing.. it is in finance.

I basically do processing for a bank.. its just data input really and have been doing for about 4 years. It is an investment bank but trust me, the job I do most places have outsourced this to India or Scotland now.

i was drafted in as a temp and there were loads of credit checks for that, they asked for 6 months statements etc.

the new perm job would be a big step up for me and i literally have just sorted my finances out in the last two months. dont owe any payday loans and am clearing out the debts i still have.

i had a huge shock when i found out that one of my loans was in arrears I didnt even realise. I have brought that upto date this week and there is only 7 months left on that and then will be clear.

I just really dont want to lose my job... I still have debts to clear and am on the right path. Am really afraid the payday loan stuff and arrears on the other loan has hurt me a lot.

i also had my phone cut off twice on contract but have paid and brought that upto date too so not too sure if thats a problem as well...

so so worried if i lose this job then i dont know what to do...

I worked in a bank previously and had to do all these checks before I could start. I thought I was okay with a couple of late payments and things, but they managed to find an old default from a few years before and an outstanding utility bill from a previous address. I just had to pay them and get a letter from the company to say the debt had been satisfied; then I was cleared. They're not really interested in your 'score' or if you've managed your accounts particularly well; they're just checking for the possibility of fraud / blackmail and as long as you're honest none of what you've described should cause a problem. Talk to HR about it. Are you unionised?
