Mortgage misery

Had remortgage in December 2005 due to OH buying small business for £60,000 (total mortgage £103,000) Now OH bankrupt and unemployed, not entitled to any benefits (I earn £17000 a year) mortgage payments £595 a month, half of this was covered by OH's business. With me being the only breadwinner at the moment these payments are crippling me. The mortgage was for 25 years (we are both 52) For the first time in 30 years of marriage we find we are struggling to pay our mortgage. Or next last resort is to go to Santander and try to slash around £200 a month off payments for a few months until OH finds work (easier said) has anybody had any experience with Santander? if myself and OH go to them what can they suggest we do? extending the term is not very favourable due to our ages.

Many thanks

Have you been on 'entitledto' to see if there are any benefits you can claim? JSA?

OH was self employed up to october last year. Worked from January until May, so we are not entitled to any tax credits etc, he does not even qualify for JSA. I have 2 children in mid 20's, eldest has lost his job and is now back home with us, he gets JSA, youngest works part time and supports her 9 month old son as well as giving us board every month. So as OH was self employed in last tax year, even though he made a loss and worked for a couple of months this year the info has been used to calculate a nil entitlement hence my query about getting mortgage reduced in first place.
