Job hunting while still employed

I'm on a 6 month placement that pays £840 per month. I have had no luck since gradutating in finding a role in marketing. When this opportunity became available I jumped at the chance to get some experience.
My problem is that what was advertised is not what I'm doing. The industry and company I work for are very slow paced and laid back, it takes forever to get people up to speed. About 3 months in I got asked if I wanted to become permanent and I kindly rejected this offer and explained that I wasnt sure if i wanted to continue working in this sector and would like to finish my placement and see how I feel then.
I have one month left and have come to the conclusion that I don't want to work here permantely. Therefore I've been applying for jobs that I feel suit me better. The obvious issue is scheduling in interviews around my job. I've had one so far and called in sick to attend (bad I know but I have no holiday left). I felt guilty about this but today they called to say I've been successful in reaching 2nd round interviews tomorrow! I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to inform my current employer because if bad comes to worst I'm planning on staying here perminantly for a few months while I look else where, so I don't want them to know. BUT there will come a point when this new job asks for a reference.
Any advice?

Many companies are aware of this problem, so offer interviews first thing or after hours - or maybe during the lunch hours. You can only ask - it may impress them that you don't want to inconvenience your existing employer or tell lies. Alternatively, do you ever work from home for a day or so - on a report for example? Some people who do this complete the hours but use some of the day time for their own purposes.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

With that level of pay I don't blame you in not wanting to commit yourself to this particular business. If you're serious about finding work then, you'll find a way to attend interviews. You always have better leverage with pay and working conditions when you are already employed as opposed to being out of work, so use this to your advantage when you get an interview and show your willingness to the prospective employer, but don't look to eager.Lao Tzu - "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime"
