Pump Out an Oil Tank

Hi, I have developed a leak in my oil tank and need it pumped out so I can replace it.

Can anyone recommend anyone that does this for a reasonable price?
I used to be indecisive, but now I am not quite sure...........:undecided

  • Check with whoever you buy your oil from. They will probably do it but it doesn't tend to be cheap.

Is it not possible to just loosen the oil feed at the bottom and run it into a drum/block it each time and drain it into a drum?

I'm getting my tank removed (moving to gas) come the weekend and that what I'll be doing!

go to mcmasters and buy a drill powered pump for @ £7.00, visit the local car washes and ask for any empty plastic 25 litre drums they have. Usually they'll give them away for nothing rather than pay to have them dumped.
couple of lengths of garden hose - 1 long enough to reach the bottom of the tank and 1 into you plastic drums.
attach the drill and pump away (start slowly so as not to burn the pump out)

We used a drill pump last time we moved and borrowed a spare oil tank and put it on a trailer, we were qouted £180 to get our tank pumped, this worked out alot cheaper.

    EF- £110/COLOR]/£1000

    £180

I would get a hose and suck it out in mouthfuls for you for that amount. Scary.
  • If you are lucky enough to have sufficient height/fall in your garden backward you might be able to syphon it out into containers. All at no cost apart from a bit of tubing. Make sure you don't get amouthful of kerosene!

Or burn out the drill. These pumps are fairly slow and it takes more than a few minutes so the drill is on for quite a while. Keep an eye on the drill and watch for over-heating or maybe do the pumping a few minutes at a time. I am speaking from experience on this one.

Slow but better than paying a lot to someone
  • When our oil tank developed a leak we asked the Tank Doc to drain it so we could replace it. He came out to look at it and was able to tell us that our tank was one of a batch that was known to develop leaks. He contacted the manufacturer for us. He drained the tank, took away the leaking tank, brought and fitted the new replacement tank and refilled it with our oil. This cost us nothing at all as the manufacturer of the original tank paid all costs directly to tank doc. - might well be worth giving him a call........
