If you happen to have finished university in the past couple of years, you will probably still be able to use their careers office for free.

Have to say I'm a little bit sceptical about paying for a generic CV/cover writing service - as how you decide to style and write these documents is all going to depend on what kind of career you're wanting to switch to, and a generic service may not have experience with that type of career. If you already know someone working in your chosen sector, could you perhaps ask them to advise you on what's appropriate for that industry?

There's plenty of free online information about CVs and resumes. Type "CV or Resume Service" to Google and the rest should take care of itself. Cost = 0 apart from your time.

    I'll do it for free.

    Send me a PM :)
  • I'll do it for £900 per page. Some idiots think the more expensive the better the service is lol. If you offer to write it for free, they'll question the quality.
  • Just as an aside ... if someone can't write their own CV and covering letter what will they do when they get the job? Find someone else to do their written work for them?

I'm not picking on CommonSense, it's just something I always think when people ask this question. Are people deceiving employers by using such a service?

Years of experience in recruitment, their loss if they don't want one.

When companies sell a product they often make use of professional advertising people to run the campaign. When an individual is trying to sell there services isn't it a logical extension to use a professional service?

No, I've never used a paid for CV service and no, I haven't found a job yet.

I paid for a CV template donkeys years ago which I still, it cost me about 3 quid and is purely just a word template with areas to insert name, education, work experience etc. Just a bit of fancy shading & fonts really! Looks better than what a novice like me could knock up on word though!

As for cover letters, I'd recommend you do it yourself. If you can't ask a mate or family. Plus they'll be tons of free ones to look at via google search.

NEVER :money: pay a company to do it for you, that's my take on it anyway.

    All the best

I don't think they're deceiving employers personally. On the otherside of the coin I personally feel job adverts should be more tightly regulated. By that I mean a person placing an advert must be obliged to indicate the MINIMUM SALARY for the position. It infuriates me that adverts can be placed with no indication of salary, you could waste hours applying/researching etc only to discover the salary wouldn't even cover your rent for a month.

As for people paying for such services, well not everybody is skilled in constructing letters/cvs etc. So I can understand why they do it but they'd be better off just using free stuff online or via library or getting friends/relatives to help them.

    No.

Companies who do a lot of recruitment can tell CVs that could possibly be written by a CV writing service.

In my case when I've helped companies with recruitment we get CVs that are too good to be true and are exactly the same in their use of words, exactly the same in layout and exactly the same in writing style as others in the pile or we have seen recently, so we conclude rightly or wrongly the CV hasn't been written by the applicant and they end up in the bin.

Even if two people have the same skills and similar work histories they have a different style of writing and the layout would be different even if the headings are the same. Also most people have a slight flaw in their CV whether it's spelling or capitalisation of a word/some words.

A lot of people tailor their CV to the job they are applying for. So they are careful to highlight the relevant experience that matches the job advert. A CV from a CV writing service doesn't do this and so the applicant's CV seems odd.

Finally a lot of covering letters/emails aren't read. Depending on the company the people reading the CV and making the decisions to interview aren't the person who receives the CV. I've never been given anyone's covering letter/email. Part of the reason is to make the recruitment process fairer and the other part is time. However not to send one is odd and this cannot be generic i.e. you have to write this yourself.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
