Hi all green MSEs. hope this is the right catergory to post under
still quite new to posting on MSE..
anyone has any advice or experience to share regarding a waste disposal unit? I hope I got the name right.. I meant those that are fitted under the sink and grinds up all the rubbish so it all flushes into the sewage system... I'm seriously considering installing one in my kitchen, have seen and used it in a few friends' houses in London and thought its a brilliant concept.. anyone?
thanks in advance!

Hi,
The real "green" option would be to compost this waste and use it on your garden. Waste disposal units only flush the waste to the sewage treatment works where the larger pieces will be strained out and sent for landfill, and the mush broken down microbially along with the rest of the waste.
With the composting route, the nutrients the waste contains aren't wasted by being dumped at sea, but help to grow more plants.
Damn well cheaper too !!!!!!0 -
be careful composting cooked food and meat though - wormeries will take some cooked waste (I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will be able to tell you what) but otherwise waste disposal units aren't a bad option although you do use quite a lot of water with them.0

If you need to compost raw or cooked meat or fish, then look into bokashi composting.
Re Waste Disposal, I have to agree with composting. Too much reward on something I'd just throw away, to throw it away.0 -
Hi there - just to answer your original post - we have had an "In sink erator (model 55)" for about 7 years now. It had a problem after about 18 months but the guarantee covered it and a new one was installed. Since then we have had trouble free waste disposing. Seems a much better idea than landfilling and I can't understand why more people don't use them - especially in flats where composting is not an easy option.

thanks for all the replies folks. all taken onboard. I know a compost heap is probably the best green and mse way, but that is not too easy for us at this time, though its not totally out of our thoughts. however like justie said, I'm not too keen on composting cooked meat and bones, hence the interest in waste dispoal units..
anyone else with advices and experiences to share please? would really appreciate it0 -
As it's been liquidised, I doubt it clogs up the sewers, and isn't it just broken down in the sewage works along with what goes down the toilet?Um, where do you think the waste goes?
It either clogs up the sewers, or gets filtered out at a treatment works and sent to, wait for it... , landfill.
Still, better to compost if you can.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
I had one when I lived in a flat. Nothing but trouble! It was brand new, so that wasn't the prob. We had an engineer out twice, who said they're fine for soft stuff. You mention bones - not in my experience!
