Handing in notice - calculating termination date

Hi all,

I am planning to hand in my notice at work which requires 8 weeks. Does this mean my 8 week notice would complete my employment on Monday 8th October or the Friday preceeding, i.e. Friday 5th October?

I have actually requested an early termination date of Friday 21st September anyway but I just wanted to ensure that I had the dates on the formal letter correct.

Many thanks in advance.

8 weeks from the point of handing it in. So if you hand in at 0900 Monday morning, then it's 0900 on the Monday in 8 weeks' time. In reality, therefore, that's the Friday before, and so I would put that on the letter.

If you leave your resignation until the afternoon of Monday, then you need to say Monday in 8 weeks.

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

My understanding is that notice runs from the beginning of the day after it is delivered, whatever time of day it is handed in.

So hand in your notice at any time on Monday and the notice would technically run from the Tuesday and therefore end on a Monday.

    Giving notice

You or your employer can give notice on any day. Normally the notice period will run from the start of the following day. For example, if you give notice on a Monday, your notice period will start on the Tuesday and will finish at the end of Monday.
You should read your contract of employment. If it lays out a different process for when notice can be given or when your notice period will run, you and your employer must follow the agreement in your contract.

That extract is, of course, assuming a one week notice period.

Yup a resignation handed in at 5pm on Monday (and accepted) would be just the same as giving it in at 9am.

If you want to leave on the 5th though, put that down, I cant see them being bothered about you leaving on the Friday instead of the monday.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I think realistically if you put your notice in tomorrow however, with the finishing date in eight weeks time on the friday most would see that as eight weeks notice - eight more weeks of work..
