Mobile hairdressers for elderly lady

Hi everyone,

I have an elderly grandmother and we are finding it increasingly difficult to get her out to the hairdresser. The trouble is that she has very limited mobility and she is exhausted by very little exertion. I would like to know if anyone has experience with mobile hair dressers who cater for this kind of customer. She will need her hair washed and is not capable of standing over the sink or basin, nor standing at the shower.

Many thanks

Adam

Can't help with a recommendation but have you considered asking in the salon she previously went to. My aunt is in a similar position now unable to go to the salon but the lady who used to do her hair in the salon offered to come to her home and do her hair for her and true to her word she did. Might be worth an enquiry, or even if you are a regular in a particular salon you could ask in there.

Thanks guys. We are in Holywood. The existing hairdresser doesnt do anything like this. We do know of a number of local people who do this sort of thing but the trouble is that they have no way of cleaning her hair. They normally take people and have them lean over the wash basin or shower but there is no way on earth she could do this.

would your gran be able to lean her head over the side of a bed or lie in the bed to get her hair washed

try searching on ebay for "inflatable in bed shampoo hair washing basin" can be used in bed and the water poured over with a jug

Where my mum lived, there was an Age Concern Day centre. There was a fee to go to that, but they had assisted baths available (book, take your towel/soap and pay £3) and they also had a hairdresser at least once a week (cut/bow dry £5-8). So that was a day out, hair done, huge lunch, cakes/coffee and lots of nattering. They'd pick her up from the door in a bus.

I would suggest getting in touch with a local nursing or residential home and asking them to give you a contact number of their hairdresser. Most nursing homes have a 'mobile' hairdresser that comes on a regular basis and if they are good they wouldn't mind passing on their details.
You may find that a hairdresser that regularly attends nursing homes will be more aware of mobility issues and will be able to solve your hair washing problem.
