Laser Eye Surgery - Is this the best deal?

Options
Hi Guys

I have been wearing contacts now for a couple years and I dont feel glasses suit me so am considering laser eye surgery.

The best deal I have found so far is Optimax have this deal which is £2295:
http://www.optimax.co.uk/treatment_costs/special_offers.aspx

My lense perscription is:

8.7 14.4 -1.25 / -1.75 x 100
8.7 14.4 -1.00 / -2.75 x 80

I dont know if that helps give an indication of my eyes!

Can anyone share their experiences or offers they are aware of please?

Thanks!
I've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.

  • Your prescription is close to mine. The advice from my optometrist is don't do it. The current techniques will not correct my vision fully, so I would still need glasses for a prescription of around 3, and my eyes would be weakened.

I would strongly recommend that you seek independent current advice from one or more optometrists who will not make a profit from your decision

I'm also planning to do surgery, but my analysis till now ..
    1. How old are you? If you are young and your prescription is not stablised, its not advised to do surgery now.
    2. Also the prescription seems to be low. It might be hard to get a 100% correction. (You need to check with a genuine optician)
    3. Laser surgery requires few pre-consultations. (mostly free). Please go and check with one of the high street giants and they can analyse your cornea, eye capability, astigmatism, eye diseases etc.. Its bit more complex than just the lens prescription

The best deal is the one that gives you the best outcome, irrespective of cost. You only get one shot at surgery and want to be satisfied with the result afterwards with no regrets.
Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

I got mine done for over £3k by a top Moorfields Eye Hospital surgeon, Julian Stevens. He's a pioneer in various techniques, does corneal transplants as well(so is a proper surgeon, not a one trick wonder) and also fixes laser surgery that's gone wrong.

So I figured rather than take the risk, I'd just pay that extra thousand, and be ensured of the best, with no side effects, haloes round lights at night, etc.

It's one of the best things I've ever done, and I regret a lot in my life. Lol.

I work on an Opthamology Unit. Not one of our surgeons has had the procedure and yes, they all wear glasses.

Lately, we've been doing corneal transplants on people had Lasik corrective surgery around 10-15 years ago due to corneal thinning. Here in Canada it's a free repair. If you chose to go to the States for the corneal transplants you are looking at 14,000USD.

I would never assume cheapest means best for laser eye surgery.

I had it done last year but I went to the advanced vision centre on Harley Street which was far from cheap but had a good reputation, Mr Pilllai was my surgeon.

A friend went to Moorfields eye hospital to have his done. Both of us were very happy with the outcome.

I'm very happy I had it done.

I would agree with the last few posts.

You cannot just pop out and buy another set of eyes. You can swap and change glasses.

If you are looking into this, then PAY for the professional opinion of proper experts, be guided by them and have it done by the BEST person using the BEST technique for YOUR eyes. If you can't afford that yet, then don't get it done until you can.

Finding the cheapest place should not be a consideration at all, never mind the top one.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I had laser surgery 4 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did.

However I do have a couple of regrets regarding the money I paid. I had a consultation from three of the big branded companies that were relatively local to me. Optical Express, Ultralase, and Optimax.
I chose Ultralase because they were the most expensive, Optical Express has a cheap looking shop (although that was just for the consultation - the actual procedure would have been done in a different city), and Optimax seemed to be a bit of a production line.
I paid £4000, and I thought the more I pay the better the service. However afterwards I was left wondering what exactly it was that I got for my money that I wouldn't have got elsewhere, I was in and out within 20 mins - didn't even get a free coffee like I did when they were trying to sell me the procedure! I felt I didn't receive any care at all. I can't believe that the cheaper companies use any different equipment or that their surgeons are any less experienced. So in retrospect I think I should have gone with the cheaper company.
Secondly I knew I would get a better deal if I waited for a while after the consultation but I was impatient. I still get offers from the other companies,I think within 3 or 4 months of my consultations I was receiving half price offers and a saving of £2000 is a big saving!

Regarding your prescription, I don't know if you would be suitable but the opthalmists are very upfront about what is and what isn't suitable for you. I have a specific abnormality which limited my options of treatment but this was all explained very well to me. I am happy with the results, I have better than 20:20 vision and have no side effects.

I would recommend you go for several consultations to get a feel of the companies you feel comfortable with and then wait a few months to decide if it's really what you want and wait for the offers to fall through your letterbox.

    Good luck. :)
  • Wearing contacts are somehow give us discomfort because it is not a part of our body at first. Maybe undergoing a laser surgery can correct your problem.
Please check or consult other first before deciding where or what you will choose.
