VODAFONE trying to claim money from me, now the debt agency. Need support.

Hi apologies if this is in the wrong topic.
I had a phone contract, which was cancelled at the start of may. I done this online, and i know how funny they can be when trying to close an account, i made sure i knew exactly how much was left to pay, which i paid, with my final bill no problem. This was cancelled, and a few days later was sent a letter "vodafone account has been closed, there is nothing more for you to pay".
Mid june, i was sent a bill for admin charges and other small this totalling £17 for use between june 2th-9th. Which although a small amount, i see no reason why i should be paying this, as i had not touched the phone since april time (infact do not even know where the sim card is)
I ignored this letter, and a week later recieved another, which i decided to phone them asking what the bill was for. They said this was the final charge, but due to language barrier they could not understand my point.
Recently i recieved another letter, and i emailed vodafone saying i will not be paying this as you have previously said "there is nothing more to pay", which was also claimed by the online advisor at the initial cancellation. Email support replied quickly stating this :
"Good Afternoon Mr Davies Further to your recent correspondence with regards to an outstanding balance on your Vodafone account, I can confirm that the matter has now been resolved and apologise for any inconvenience caused as we have cleared the outstanding balance. Regards Mark Vodafone Customer Relations Team"
This would seem quite clear, and so I left it. That was last week, and today I received a letter from their debt collection asking for this money. I instantly phone, and they were very rude, and ignorant however i had no interest what they had to say, so i simply said im not paying. and they asked for this proof to be sent to their email. Which i have done.
On reading the letter again, it states that a default had been added to my file!!! entirely unfair, and not something i can afford to do as a 22 year old with larger ambitions.
Am i right to refuse to pay this ? how do i go about in ensuring this is removed from my file ? Is this somthing i should seek legal advice over?
thanks alot in advanced
