Minimum wage & no travel expenses

I work, or rather worked for a meter reading company. They paid me the National Minimum Wage but they do not pay any form of mileage allowance. As a result I have been spending £10-£15 on fuel.
I accept that I should have to cover the cost of my travel from my home to my first job of the day, but can the company NOT pay any expenses for travel costs from the first job to the second and second job to the third etc?
My travel costs mean that I am earning less than the minimum wage.
They also deduct from your working hours any period of 30 minutes or more of inactivity on your hand held unit that records your meter readings. In some areas I spent over 30 minutes travelling from one location to another.
So, can they NOT pay any expenses which result in your earning less than the NMW?
Can they deduct time from your working hours spent travelling between jobs?
Thanks
Mike

It depends on how your contract and terms of employment were worded.
Have you spoken to them about this?
Are you using your own car? If so, do you have business use because if you don't, you're driving uninsured.0 -
Mate what a con, sorry but that is shamful, you should be given milage and a payment if you are using your own car, the 30 min rule is also unreasonable if you travel and can not gain access to a property, why should you loose money, I would look for a new job that one sounds the pits.0

For that line of business, i would have anticipated that they would have paid fuel.
Also, do you/them not have to pay for "business" insuarance aswell if you are driving about the place?0
