Time to sort our lives out, so we can live a little :-)

Oh dear, not a good start! Have just realised that I posted this in completely the wrong bit!! I'll try again :)

Hi,

Okay so I've been stalking the forum for a while but have decided that it's time to sort our lives out!

Everything has been a little chaotic lately and I have let so many things slide, the main thing being our debts! We were lucky enough to claim back quite a bit of PPI from Welcome Finance back in 2010 thanks to MSE but while we used the bulk of it to pay off our debts and become debt free we have fallen back into the habit of using my credit card, our catalogues and the overdraft to get through each month.

Our debts are not high by some peoples standards, around £2,400.00 owed to creditors but I also owe £6,000.00 to the family business which we borrowed to buy a new car.

Things have been tough over the last few months, we got married in June and then due to work commitments and a house falling through I had to move an hour away to live with my parents in order to save money and for our girls to take up their school places. So we got married and the following weekend the kids and I moved out (after 6 years of living in sin haha).

Thankfully, we have now found another house and are due to move in on the 25th August, all going to plan, fingers crossed, touch wood etc!!!

We both work for my Dad in the family business and following an extremely busy few months we are now worryingly quiet which adds to the stresses and strains. Of course I don't just worry about 'us' making ends meet, I also have to worry about the company making ends meet.....eeek!! By moving nearer to work we should automatically be saving £700.00 a month just through childcare and petrol, although with saving for the move we have yet to 'see' the savings!

Anyhoo, I could talk for England once I get started! So, basically, our plan is to buy a house. I have 1 CCJ that will be wiped off come October and I would like to clear my debts before I apply for a mortgage as well as have as much saved up as possible.

I figure that by writing here it might spur me on and perhaps stop my spending. We both earn okay money yet never seem to have any so therefore our spending must be the culprit. If I can find a way of spending less and paying off more then it can only be a win win situation!

I look forward to hearing any advice that anyone can give me and apologies if I've bored you to tears!!!

  • Some advice would be much appreciated!!
Me and partner are in a 1 bedroom flat with 1 child and have some debts which needs shifting quickly but dont know what direction to go in!
    Mortgage 76898
    Welcome finance 16000 at 8% paying 128
Rbs with Wescott 16000 at 0% paying 20

The property is worth 85000 ish. We need to get out of here for little ones sake so 2 year is our aim. We just don't know which debt to concentrate on more. I hear welcome finance don't usally do settlement discounts but Wescott would so should I scrape together another £300 extra to WF or pay a extra £100 which would cut the term from 20 years to 6 years and then pay off in 3 years ( with a ppi being taken off) and save £200 in a account and go to Wescott and settle them and then tackle WF when we sell??

    Hi Jemma,
For your best chance of help, you should post that on the debt free wannabies board - copy and paste what you have written to this link, should work.
