The way for us to get out of recession is to go back to being the trading nation we once were.

We could do masses more to aid our trading outcomes.
The priority should be less employment and H&S regulation. Many more people would benefit (by having a job) than be detrimented, that for me is the key test.

exports tell you a lot more about the strength of the economies that we're exporting to [together with exchange rates] than they do about the strength of ours.

if [say] brazil's GDP is booming, increasing its demand for exports, then some of that demand will benefit the uk regardless of what's going on there.

but if jobs have to go they certainly won't be shutting any factories in Japan.

Following the nuclear disaster Japan has severe power problems. So unsurprisingly Companies are happy to expand overseas production.

Japan has a declining population and the highest working age on average in the world I think.

The main threat to uk would be from a lower focus on sales to europe meaning the production might move closer to its sale in south america or wherever

I think we need a lot more of the professional and managerial jobs here in the UK if we are to maintain our standard of living and quality of life.
Government subsidises to attract "screwdriver" jobs, just cannot work in a global economy

I think it's good if we have started trading more with the rest of the world rather than sticking in a tunnel vision and seeing just Europe as our main trading partner.

The trade deficit though is at a record high according to the ONS so while it's good we are trading more with the world rather than just Europe, it does not seem that we can say that we are experiencing an export led recovery. Exports to the Eurozone fell in June by over 7% which is to be expected given the troubles they have, equally this means that it's not really surprising that our world exports are now meeting and surpassing what we export to Europe. Yet over all we are still down over 8% on sales of British goods to overseas, hence our growing trade deficit.

I also think it's wrong to attribute a great deal to this government. It's business themselves who are going after sales in other parts of the world as their Europe market dries up. I don't see that the government have done anything of significance to help exports or business for that matter. The burning of red tape has still not happened.
