I assume you're looking for something to learn on?

No specific ideas about where to find them cheap cheap, but just to say that you're better off looking for a decent second hand model (if in good nick) than a dirt-cheap new one. The Squire range of basses (basically lower-spec Fenders) are very good for the money, for example - I wouldn't get anything worse than that.

If you've played before and know what you're looking for (and can spot faults etc), then try your local loot and newspapers since there may be a second hand up for sale which is in budget. Last thing you want though if you're not experienced, is to buy what you think is a decent guitar but when you get it home you start noticing all the faults.

I get all my musical equipment shipped from Germany. I use thomann.de since their prices are often tens if not hundreds of pounds lower than rrp.

Their cheapest electric bass is this one I believe http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_mb222t.htm

Beyond that, it might be worth going into a Dawsons (not to buy) and trying out some models so you can get a feel of what you might like.

If you want an electric bass, you'll need an amp too.

I've been playing for a few years and my last bass was a gorgeous 5-string but we had to sell it to go towards paying off a debt.

Thomann are good, however I'd probably agree with getting something second hand and fairly recent, as opposed to something brand new and really cheap. Again, the Squires are good value, I'd go for one of those over a Tesco Value guitar like a Stagg. You might even find some at decent prices brand new actually. Try one some in a music shop, and if they don't have any that fit your budget (although most shops will have used stock too), you'll know what you're looking for and you can try and find it cheaper elsewhere.

Decent make, gorgeous looking and a bargain... I'm actually waiting to hear back from a band I went to an audition for to see whether I can justify spending £150 on it though..

  • Mmmm might have trouble later if you try to sell it. Wouldn't think it's everybody's cup of tea!
