2nd hand sky box, remote doesn't work

My OH bought a second hand Sky + box at auction. It works fine but the remote flashes lights but doesn't affect the box. How do you make a remote 'talk' to a box.
As you may have guessed we are both very untechnically minded!

Hi,

not sure about the + box, but make sure you press SKY button on remote first.

mine does this sometimes and I usually alternate between the sky and tv buttons and eventually it comes on

O maybe now you know why it was up for sale.

Borrow a remote from a friend to make sure it is the remote that is faulty. If it is plenty of cheap replacements on Ebay.

I am, from experience, in the case of the picture its lacking on the button front not having any of the Sky + controls.

don't have Sky+, was only going by Argos info, so disregard.

Not all Sky remotes are the same... I have 2 like the one on the left above but only the one on the right will operate the Sky HD+ box

Just wondering, do you need a code to match the remote to your TV? Not very techie minded but I know we needed one some years ago.

Edit: or, using Sky remote:

Press 'Interactive' button > 3 > down arrow to 'Program your Sky remote', follow on screen instructions.
