Tax reference

Hi,

I have this weird tax reference code. I spoke to my employer and all she did was google it, but found nothing. I spoke to the tax office and they said it shoukd be changed by the company, so I told them this.

I got my pay slip today and because of this code have been taxed £43.40 after working 32.5 hours over two weeks. I am on minimum wage too.

In my first wage, I worked 4.5 hours and was taxed £7.80.

The code is 245/ch702. Does anyone know what this means and how I go about sorting it out? I am working no more than 20 hours per week but am being taxed obscene amounts!

  • When you started this job, did you give them a P45 or fill in a P46?

Did you have taxable company benefits at your previous job?

Have you had any coding notices - they often arrive in April?

I was studying before. I've been out of employment for four years. The company filled in a p46 (that's right?) on my behalf. I couldn't possibly be paying my student loan back on 20 hours, could I?

This looks more like an employer's referance with the tax office.
Can you give all the details from your payslip?
Which option was selected on the P46 A, B or C?

I agree with chrisbur that reference is probably your employers PAYE reference number ie: what they are known by with HMRC just like you are known by your National Insurance number.

The tax code used to calculate how much tax to deducted is probably BR or 0T but if this is your only job it should be 810L (assuming you're under 65). HMRC can correct the code for you.

Tax of £43.4 is tax at 20% on £217.
    32.5 hours at £6.08 ph is £197.60.
    Does not compute
245/ch702 could be for a firm with a wages office based in North Essex/Suffolk (with a depot in Doncaster); the name of this firm would begin with Ch...........
