dairy free chocolate?

I'm allergic to dairy and I've never been able to find a bar of white dairy free chocolate in the supermarkets, which means that it's incredibly difficult to buy cheaply. Even the normal dark or "milk" alternative chocolates are expensive when you compare them to ordinary chocolate bars.

Does anyone know of anywhere to find cheap dairy free alternatives to chocolate? Especially white, seeing as I've never seen it anywhere at all below £3 for a small bar. Thanks.

Most dark chocolates don't have dairy in, although do check the packet and these are often on offer, Lindt, Green and Blacks, supermarket own brands etc.

I'm sorry I can't help you on the white.

I used to be allergic to dairy so I know what a trial it is to find things, I used to just not eat chocolate!

The only white chocolate I know of is the Organica brand, which is gorgeous but usually only found in health food shops. Asda used to stock some vegan chocolate buttons, both white and "milk", but they have long since vanished.

Asda and Morrisons both sell small dairy-free bars which taste like milk chocolate, they do an orange one and a rice crisp one in their "free from" aisles. They are about 80p and very nice.

Tesco has a nice plain chocolate amongst its Eastern European range which I think was less than £1 last time I bought it.

Kinnerton plain chocolate bars seem to be stocked by most supermarkets, usually in the "free from" aisles. Currently £1.06 for an 85g bar in Asda, according to mysupermarket.

There's Quite a few different bars on veganstore.co.uk, but they're still about £2.80 for a 100g bar.
Amazon also have a few different bars, roughly 3 100g bars for £8 ish.
Also try Holland and Barrett, they sell quite a few bits of dairy free chocolate.

I didn't know dark chocolate didn't contain milk so I'll have a look at some of that I think as sometimes you can get them really cheap!

I already knew about the other flavours in the supermarkets but in my local supermarkets they seem to be a lot more expensive than that Kinnertons for example is about £2.09 in my local Sainsbury's for the 100g bar. Not sure how it's so much different if you say it's £1.06 in Asda so I'll check it out there too. Thanks.

I hadn't thought to look in Holland and Barrett as there isn't one near me. I'll have a look on the website though so thanks!

Some dark chocolate does contain milk, so make sure to read the label. I don't like chocolate so I'm not sure which ones are and arent, but I'm pretty sure cadbury bournville is milk free, and the various frys creams are also ok.

I wouldn't say that dark chocolate contains no milk it depends on the brand and % of cocoa.

My local Sainsbury's, Tesco, ASDA and Morrisons have Free From sections now and this is often where the SMs put organic too ! I'd suggest looking there first as I've never seen Free From in my local Lidl.

Sorry OP you have to accept that if you have an allergy to something that is an integral part of a product naturally, then it's going to cost more for a version without the allergen because it costs more to produce. It's the same for organic, gluten free, kosher and halal as well. More difficult and costly to produce, has to be kept separate from other products, fewer sales = more expensive to buy.

My local Tesco sells absolutely no dairy free products in the free from aisle. Soya milk is all they sell. It's unfair, I think, because I know that there's at least another 3 people that I'm friends with that live in the same town that also have a dairy allergy. There would probably be a great deal more than just the 4 of us. And the soya milk is always out of stock, which proves something, I think. They get a delivery one day and it's all gone the next.

I understand that it's going to cost more to produce but I don't think paying £3 for a bar that, if it contained the allergens, could cost as little as 35p is a bit too high, at least for me. That's why I asked if there was anything cheaper than that out there. £3 seems excessive for a 35g bar.

Suggest calling Tesco customer services and complaining and also looking at other shops cos I'm sure I've seen dairy free choc in the big Morrisons in next town to me.

Is there an association for ppl with dairy allergies ? If so maybe they can recommend a manufacturer and maybe you could buy direct ?

My nearest Morrisons is about 15 miles away. My nearest Sainsbury's is about 4 miles and their products are okay, actually. Asda's about 9 miles I think. Tesco is about a mile. So it's closer in terms of petrol usage and things like that (I'd walk but I have a disabled mum and she loves shopping so I take her too). I think I might have to complain to Tesco because it's a bit unfair they just stopped selling it.

I would imagine there is. I know there are certain websites ie Kinnertons that would have dairy free on them. I used to live near their factory so then it wasn't a problem but now it's more expensive. Maybe if they have a website, it would be cheaper? I'll have to take a look. I hadn't thought to go direct, to be honest.

Really? I searched Amazon yesterday and the cheapest that came up was £2.35! Haha. I'll try again. Maybe I wasn't searching the right part. Thanks.

my local tesco has just started selling these again http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=262564910. They have improved the flavour a lot and very reasonable in price. They also do the white ones but you have to catch it at the right price as they sell out quick. If you ask at customer services in your local tesco they will most likely get them in for you . I like the white chocolate buttons but I am yet to find a bar of dairy free white chocolate that I like (don't like the plamil one). I tend to buy most of my dairy free chocolate from either my local wholefood store or websites like animal aid, veganstore and goodness direct.
