White Linen Trousers - black mark

Hi I've a pair of white linen trousers which I have worn once. Washed according to the instructions, hung them out to dry and when I got them off the line there was a black mark which definitely wasn't there when it was hung out
I always wipe the line before pegging out, the pegs are clean (kept indoors when not in use) and I have no idea what this mark is.
It looks like a black smudge (not bird poo) almost like a charcoal smudge? had caught it but it won't come out.
I've tried a general purpose Stain Devil which usually is pretty good on anonymous marks, have washed it again with a stain remover (ariel's one) rubbed into it and washed, still there. Tried Ace laundry bleach (again rubbed into it and washed) and no joy.
I use washing powder with Soda Crystals in most washes anyway, and am now at a loss as to what to try.
Any ideas? Thanks

I would try household bleach, use a small artists paint brush and apply just to the stain, then as soon as the stain disappears rinse well or wash again. The bleach shouldn't damage the fabric as long as it's not on it for too long.0

This thread on removing stains from school shirts may help as they are white items?
or there is a thread on removing ink stains from clothing which is also packed with ideas
Let us know how you get on and we will merge this laterA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

thank you, I'll have a look at those threads. Going to try the bleach/paintbrush first.
