Interesting. What side effects are you referring to?
They can have lots of side effects, what specific ones depends on the type of antihistamine, read the information leaflet. Personally I can't take Piriton, I haven't had any problems from any other though. Like any side effects from any medication, they vary from person to person, most people won't get them badly or at all.

The best way to describe the side effects I get from anti histamines is flu like symptoms. Extreme tiredness and lethargy. They are only designed to treat the symptoms and not the cause of the symptoms. Spend some time reading about allergies and natural treatments to see why you suffer so badly. Your local library is a good place to start.

It is thought that some restrictive diets like low calorie plans are causing an increase in food intolerances as you rely more heavily on carbohydrates and the body finds them more difficult to process. I would strongly suggest you look at a low GI diet there are loads of them in print and see how you feel from there. It encourages the removal of processed food and cutting out refined sugar.

Read books by Patrick Holford, Dr Mike Dow or Zoe Harcombe
