I want extra wooden bed slats

Hi

I've just purchased a wooden bedstead with a slatted base. Upon emailing the the manufacturer of the mattress I was going to buy to make sure it was suitable for use on a slatted bed, I've found out the slats are too spaced out so I'm looking to buy some extra ones. As the current slats aren't sprung can I just go and buy specific sized wood from somewhere like B&Q to put between the existing slats and so reduce the space ?

Thanks for any advice.

    Hiya,

I have just replaced the slats on my son's metal frame double bed with ordinary pine wood (ok snaffled from my friends work) and we went for wider slats than the one's which were already in there and put a couple exta on for more support, but you could mix the wider ones with the narrow ones.

They are nothing fancy, and if you are local to me (Dundee) I still have the old narrow slats which you or anyone else is welcome to have. PM me if you want them.

As for going to B & Q, ok you can do that but you might find the slats cheaper at a builders merchants and they might even be able to cut them to size for you saving a lot of hastle. In Dundee I'm thinking of Trojan who would do this for you.

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the reply and the offer of the free slats. Unfortunately as I'm
Belfast I don't think I'll be able to take you up on the offer. Think I'll try and find a builders merchant then and buy me some wood.

    Thanks again.

I actually sell beds and mattresses, and this is the advice I give to many of my customers, as I have also done this on my own pine slatted bed:

If there is a branch of Wickes in Belfast then they do a pack of 5 planks which are only about 5' or 6' long (so you may need to cut them down). They have rounded edges so they won't cut into your mattress, and they were the right thickness for my bed. Just by adding the 5 extra slatts the gaps were closed to around 1", which is fine for any type of mattress.

If your slatts can't be moved, then buy a sheet of peg board. It usually comes in 8'x4' sheets, so it will need to be cut down in length. Don't worry if you have 6" at either side of the slatts that isn't covered by the peg board, most people don't sleep on the very edge of the mattress.
