Self-employed but NI deducted by client

Hello,

I'm currently in my second year of being self-employed for which I make regular monthly NI contributions by DD.

I have just received payment from a client but they have deducted NI from my pay (but not tax). The client employed me on a freelance basis so could this be an error on their part? Or has there been a sudden change to NI contributions for the self-employed that I am not aware of?

The work I carry out as 'freelance' is infrequent and secondary to my PAYE work. As a result, I will be able to have the NI contributions that I have been paying by DD, reimbursed.

The IR is closed over the weekend so I am unable to phone them for advice. Does anybody know if it will be straight forward for me to get the NI that has been deducted by the client reimbursed?

Cheers!

What do you do? Talking from memory of a few years ago there are some "occupations" which are proscribed (or prescribed, I'm not sure) for NIC purposes as employments whereas the IR had to decide from common law principles whether you were employed or self employed. The one I remember was peripatetic teachers, particularly of music. They were classed as employees for NIC purposes but could easily be classed as self-employed for Income Tax purposes. As far as I know that can still happen.

The work I do does not fall under this category.

No, I have never been given a tax voucher nor have I heard of one before. How do they work? I normally get paid a set amount of money for a day's work and receive payment in full, with no NI or tax deductions taken by the client. That is all taken care of through my self-assessment and monthly contributions.

    This has never happened before.

Ah sorry, the tax voucher scheme is the construction industry. They deduct 18% and your recieve a voucher with it.
I used to be paid in gross before i joined the CIS scheme and was responsible for all tax and NI payments.Find the CIS so much easier.
