Surely the point is that there are a great many positioins in MH that don't involve patient contact. If the OP was a qualified pharmacist, or a clerk, or typist, or vegetable peeler, or laundry sorter, or accountant for example, they couild spend a whole career in MH without ever clapping eyes on a patient

    Which is why this...
The job I am considering applying for is irrelevant to this thread. It's just a job in mental health.

    ... is incorrect!

Sorry .... I can't see what's incorrect about the post. Could you explain?

The OP is saying that the role is irrelevant to her question. Which I believe is incorrect because, as you rightly point out, there are a multitude of roles in mental health - and the answer to her question varies wildly according to what she would actually be doing, whether or not she would be having patient contact, etc etc etc.

Can be a very pressured and stressful role. Would that be compatible with your condition?

Jo - many trusts, local authorities and MH charities employ people as MH support workers (and in other roles) who have personal experience of MH problems and many of them have used MH services themselves, some as in-patients.

  • I agree it could be stressful and perhaps I was jumping in too quickly by thinking I could do such a job.

I might look for some voluntary work within the MH sector.

    Thanks Errata :)

I think you probably are ... at least at this stage.

That could be good, but even then, you might find that you have to wait, unless it's a very unpressurised situation, and you will need to be honest and up-front.

I'd also say not to take it as a personal affront if you're told "no, not yet", even if you've met their time limits (if they have any), because this will be from concern for you and your health.

It might be worthwhile investigating the opportunitiues for user involvement in your local NHS Trust. A first step would be to contact PALS for info - most Trusts have a UI officer (very often someone who has used services themselves). HTH
