Make a will (in Scotland)
Options
Hello all,
Have finally decided to post on these friendly and useful forums. One of my New Year's resolutions was to make a will and I'm only just getting round to doing it. I believe you can buy kits to fill in yourself but there seems to be a fairly big variation in prices. I'm also based in Scotland so I'm guessing I might need a Scottish version but am not really sure about that, so was just wondering if anybody here has gone through this process before.
Thanks alot,
Andy

I've looked at these diy products and decided to go via solicitor route - I thought it was just too important to depend on my understanding. Also, if you aren't familiar with wills and/or you have dependants, I'd urge you to consider using a professional instead.
Basic wills can be done for £45+vat (lowest quote i found), shop around. Any decent solicitor will help you through your personal maze.
Sometimes the end product doesn't seem that weighty- but there are 3 definate advantages of going via professional:
- they provide techical guidance specific to your circumstances, i was amazed what cropped up in the discussion, that i hadn't even thought about.
- they keep a original copy 'safe'
- have recourse if needed
if you're really short of readies you could use diy until the usual ' free will service drive' that many charities sponsor. It's worth looking around your local media to see if anything's happening in your area.
If your set on the diy products, then also look at some of the internet sites-you could do a dummy run on some of these and decide whether or not to pursue diy route or not.
Promise you I'm not in the profession....but having just had to tie up my dad's estate, I have realised the benefit of him having made a will via a professional source.

I have looked at these kits in the past, but seem to apply to English law.If you don't mind leaving it for abit how about waiting for 'will aid' in November. That way you can benefit a charity as your fees are donated to charity.0

I live in Scotland have decided the way estates are split to wife and kids etc suits me just fine. So do not see the need.
Obviously if you want to do it differently you will have to draw one up. However if you want to disinherit anyone that should get a pertion they can have a legal claim on what (according to the law) is rightfully theirs.
I have not looked into this for a while but I beieve I am baically correct to the best of my knowledge.0 -
Im Scottish and in the process of getting myself a will too. I found out that if you are part of a trade union you can make use of a free will service. My mum is in Unison and has just received hers. Worthwhile looking into if you're a member.0

Thanks alot for all the replies,
I'll probably just get it done through a lawyer though I might hold off till November so even if it costs the same at least the money goes to charity, I don't have any real intentions of dying before then anyhow
thanks,
Andy0
