Conflicting tax letters

My hubby has just had a letter from the tax people telling him he owes them £20-odd quid for an overpayment of income tax (yesterday).
Today he's received another letter from them telling him that they owe him £50-odd quid.
Is there any sense at all in that?
I always find letters from the tax people to read like complete gobbledegook but that's the upshot of the two letters.

Are they for different tax years? The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

It is a good idea to learn the rules and re-calculate your tax for yourself soon after April 6th each year. Then you can decide for yourself if HMRC have over/under charged you.
It may be a pain, but you can't assume that your employer and HMRC have got it right.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

No, same year. The £50odd one is in the form of a cheque, and looking at the letters again, it seems they've already deducted the £20odd before awarding the £50odd.

It is very unlikely that they are for the same year.
It is probably 2 yrars, with the result from the first included in the second to arrive at the total.
Can you tell us what forms you got (probably p800) an# what tax years are shown on the forms.0
