My next step?

Last year I went through 5 stages of interview with a very big company and got the job only to be told that there was no budget for my role. In the meanwhile I got another job and have been there since April.
Last night I sent a message to the HR person who gave a telephone interview for job 1 to congratulate him on his promoted post. He replied to my message and said that his colleague was looking for my details as a job had come up and was I still interested.
Im not sure what to do now as I got a really good impression from this company and it's a place I could see myself working at for a very long time. The only bad thing is, it's only for an initial 12 months.
My plan was to reply to him and ask for his colleagues contact email to get in touch and find out more about the role and salary etc. I don't want to get my hopes up high but I'm hoping there is too for negotiation on length of contract or a pay rise.
My plan for my current job was to work there for a few years to gain experience as I don't have any in this field til now. It's not a company I could work for, for life but the other one is.
What would you do?

I personally took a 9 month FTC with a large company i wanted to work for, on the basis i could use that 9 months to secure a permanent contract, or find another role internally. With leavers, possible growth, other departments recruiting etc there is always a good chance of a job coming up
That said in the current climate you have to prepare for worst case scenario. If it looks after 10 months as if there may not be a permanent job how employable will you be on the market? Do you feel you may be left in a really awkward position.
It is definitely worth articulating to the company how you feel and seeing what scope there is for negotiation on a few points0 -
Wise words Jimavfc82 - thank you. Yes I had the intention of asking what the chances were of securing a permanent job after. With regards to employability if they don't want me, on the one hand, I will have approx 18months experience in the field but 12 months of that would be with this company who turns over $5b a year compared to the £100m company I work for.0

In this day and age there is little that is a perm role and unless salary isnt important to you I wouldn't plan to stay with any company "for life" - you'll get faster promotions internally but much bigger payrises externally.
A 12 month contract is perfectly fine for proving your worth and getting a perm role. I left a perm role for a 3 month contract many years ago, was invited to go perm there but chose to stay as a contractor (3x the pay) and was there for 3 years. I then chose to leave to move on to my next client and have pretty much repeated the process since then.0 -
Nothing to loose by investigating the option and can use the current job to leverage a better deal than the previous unfunded position.
As you had a previous offer on the table you are probably automaticaly through some of the vetting process and an easy recruitment option with no fees to outside agencies etc.
this also puts you in a posittion to realy probe about the role and future.0 -
Update: I sent a reply yesterday and got a call today! It was a broken line (typical) but I think he offered me the job without having to go through the interview process again
:D:D Just have to go in for an informal chat. I've asked for all details on email to be sent to myself so I can peruse over it tonight, I just hope that I can negotiate a better wage. OMG OMG I just hope it's better than what I'm getting now. Last time I applied there was only a £500 differential n wage.
Hope I didn't misunderstand him though. I'm scared now cos it means I may have to hand in resignation to my Manager and I'll have let him down but guess that's normal.0 -
Update: Informal chat is Tues after work, any tips??? I'm meeting 2 guys whom I didn't meet last time.0
