Student in Trouble!!

  • Have you contacted your student union? They will have seen people in similar problems and much worse and should be able to help.

I've had a friend be able to apply for a hardship loan through uni in a similar situation (had to pay his overdraft back) and they gave him £500 which he paid back in 3 installments inline with his student loan. Always worth just asking as they won't want to lose the fees you're bringing in to the uni.

Side note - I'm a member of the 2.2 club and I had a few interviews and got to choose my job out of 3 that I had job offers for, so I disagree with the earlier poster who said a 2.2 isnt worth it. It does make it a bit more difficult to get your foot in the door of a big firm but lots of people will look past that i've found.

It is definitely worth looking into moving to a student account with another bank - even if you go in for an appointment and ask what the likelihood is of being acceptable with the phone bill several years ago. I had a default in 2008 but was accepted for a first direct account in 2011, with an overdraft facility offered (but declined in my case). If that's the only black mark on your credit account it may not be enough for them to outright reject your custom.

As RAS said - are you sure you'll be getting student finance this year? I looked into changing degrees two years in and rejected the idea because they wouldn't fund me for the first two years.

And count me in to the 2.2 club! I graduated 7 years ago and I have a very satisfying career, am fairly well paid (public sector but I'd be paid a lot more if I went into the private sector!), own my own house and since I paid off all the debt I accumulated whilst young and stupid, I want for nothing. No degree is worthless.
