work programme work trial [Rejected Job Offer]

Well the work programme is a new government initiative to assists joe public to find sustainable full time employment.

In actual fact they just stick you in any job they can find suitable/sustainable/duration are certainly not relevant as the get monies from the European Social Fund for getting "clients" into full time work. The only thing you do full time is attend the training provider for the next 2 years.

This is my experience so far.....

A job came up that i thought might be decent and at least permanent. So i attended a an induction at the training provider. This is where the bull !!!! starts.
We sat down for an induction with our Employment Support Manager where they basically tell us about the company, jobs available, production ,rates of pay £6.50-£7.00 etc. All was looking rosey.

So i attended a work trial,
Work Trials

A Work Trial gives you the chance to show an employer that you are the right person to fill a job. It is entirely voluntary.

The benefits are if you leave the trial at any point if you feel its not adequate you can leave and continue claiming benefits in the hope of finding more suitable employment. Also if you turn down a job offer the same principle applies.
Your benefits will not be affected if you:
  • want to leave the Work Trial early
  • turn down the job if you are offered it at the end of the trial

I then filled in the relevant forms to allow me to commence the trial starting the following Monday. So i turned up Monday keen, eager and in high spirits. This feeling was short lived. After yet another induction about working in High Risk with foods we was taught the changing procedures, issued new wellies and other ppe clobber.

Day One ended well. Day 2 started sh1tty, we walked into the changing room and some greasy hairy mother fooker nicked my wellies, so was told to put on some one Else's p1ss wet through stinking sweaty wellies. I was now p1ssed off and group moral was low.We kind of got the jist of the job and plodding on making these pre-packed salads.

So around the third day in i started having doubts about the job and made this concerns to my line manager, he encouraged me to stick it out and changed the job i was on from folding ham/slicing eggs to packing. To be fair i enjoyed this.

We was supposed to be get a visit from the "Employment Support Manager" to claim expenses back and talk about concerns. This person did not turn up. So the day after we get told hes coming again and i wanted out of this horrible job trial, but again he did not turn up. I am not the type of person to just quit so turned in for the last day. At least id still have that bit of experience and had an insight of what's required in that line of work.

On the final day the advisor then turned up at 4pm and this is where 14 of us hit him with a tirade of abuse about our treatment, conditions and concerns. He was on the back foot because he fooked up. The forms we filled in to commence the work trial he'd forgot to send off. Anybody that was on the trial that was supposed to sign on would of been excused due to the trial. The fact he didnt send them in untill Friday the day we finished means that those that didn't sign on didnt get paid. This was due to everyone got marked down that they just didn't turn up to sign on because the benefits office were unaware they was on a trial.

Lets get back on track.

So i told them it would depend on the wages, i did appreciate and respect them that worked there and enjoyed that line of work. I have a back round in the construction trade and this place was really out of my comfort zone and so far from the type of work id like to be involved in. So as quoted above within the work trial guide lines i was waiting to here what offer they would make if i was successful in gaining employment with them before point blank turning down a job.

They put together a offer that was so far away then what we was told on the induction, the training center glorified the facts. The days were wrong, the hours were wrong, the hourly rate was minimum wage and to top it off it was only for 3 months.

So i told the politely that the offer wasn't attractive and kindly refused as i was able to within the conditions and guidelines of the work trial.

This is where its now turned messy and the fun begins. Because i turned down the offer im now being threatened to be sanctioned (benefits stopped) as i turned down a job and now it seems with the training provider that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing or they just don't know there own guidelines or how the benefits system work.

Ive now revoked the consent forms that allow them to disclose any of my information,i have attached this template at the bottom. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

As it stands im now awaiting a phone call from the training provider for my next appointment and hopefully to iron out these issues. Hopefully i can find work before the outcome.

Ill keep you posted and will now look into the worst case scenario on sanctions.

You turned down a job offer? Why?

Yes you can be sanctioned if its not reasonable why you did so

He feels hes entitled to more hours, more pay and better work

Rather than taking the 3 months and using that experience to get something better

Why? He was on a work trial and it does state you can turn down any offer of employment if on a work trial. I for one don't blame OP for not accepting and to me the WP adviser totally over egged the pay to get people to go on the trial.

If that's fact then they can't sanction the OP so why the worry?

    Is this Brookes?

Fact of the matter is, the WP provider makes money when people go into jobs. If WP providers have the power to apply sanctions.... If you get sanctioned, get onto http://www.boycottworkfare.org/ and the media.
Wanted a job, now have one.
