Explain sweetie buffets to me

Ok, I love everything sweet, I am very girly, love pink and cutesy things and old-fashioned/vintage looking things, etc......BUT I just don't 'get' sweetie buffets at weddings. Is it quite a recent trend? How did it come about? What's the point....?

So please tell me, why did you have/are you having a sweetie buffet? Did the guests like it? How does it work? (I.e. at what point in the evening does it come out, does it replace or just compliment favours, is it in addition to or instead of a normal buffet....etc)

This is something that I feel I SHOULD like (if you know what I mean....) because on paper it sounds so very 'me' - but for some reason I just don't get it!!!

It fills the gap between food. We used it as i kept seeing lovely glass bowls in charity shops whilst looking for plates and dishes for afternoon tea we were doing. It looked good. Kids and big kids liked it. We preferred it to favours. Any excuse for floral gums, liquorice, popping candy on our wedding day ;). I enjoyed making the sign . I managed to get pink spotty bags to match a bit of a spots theme we had going. It just fitted so well for us basically. A few said they had never heard of them at our wedding reception but they thought it was a great idea. Just went with the relaxed nature of our wedding really.

I've seen a lot of these being advertised but not yet at a wedding. My friend had one at the weekend for her 50th party and it was utterly demolished by us all. So from that point of view I think it was very popular!

I am doing one for my sisters wedding present. Its like anything wedding related I suppose, not necessary but so fun to have if you can afford it!Kids and adults alike love it! I am doing a retro one - choc bananas, fizz whizz candy etc, I cant wait!

I saw it a while ago on US Four Weddings and fell in love with the idea.

Me & OH are big kids and love our sweets so this has us written all over it. :rotfl:Especially as OH propose with a Haribo ring

We're having it on the edge of the dance floor after the main meal. It's just a bit of fun

  • I like it as an idea, but I don't know if it's something I'd do because I'm not sure how well older guests in particular would respond to it. I saw it once a few years ago at a wedding when I was working in a hotel, done in combination with a chocolate fountain, but other than that I've only seen it in wedding magazines! I always though the purpose was to replace dessert (probably because that's what it was used for at the wedding I saw it at), but equally I suppose you could do it to replace/go with an evening buffet or instead of canapes.

A cake buffet, on the other hand - now that I am totally on board with, although again I don't know if we'll do it because I suspect I would get enormously carried away!

Minerva, my friend had one and all the guests loved it, including the older guests. It was so well received, that's what swung it for us and we decided to have one instead of favours. We had been thinking about it for a while, but were undecided and thought we would probably do normal favours before then.

At my friends wedding there were people doing sherbet races with giant space dust!

I like the idea, having a sweet tooth myself, but with 1/3 of my guests being under 16 I don't like the idea of several kids running riot after getting a sugar rush! My son and niece bounce off the walls if they have too much sugar!

I do sweet buffets,my customers had theres in the evenings after the buffet came out.its a little bit of fun and something different.everyone loves it and it goes down really well.Reason they had theres after food was because u pay for food for everyone to then fill them up on sweets,if u did this before the evening food then it wouldnt get eaten.Favors are still given out in the day so this is extra.
Im having one,be a bit odd if i didnt really when its my thing lol we are having ours open at 9pm after the evening buffet and i will also give out favors with the wedding breakfast.
And just to add, the adults are worse than the kids lol

I had a sweets buffet and I'm slightly biased as I hire them out too, but old and young both love it.
We had ours set up all day and people started to help themselves after dinner. It was all gone at the end of the night.

I had some old fashioned sweets in there for the oldies and they loved it!
