Losing weight after Depo

  • Not related to weight loss but last week I discussed, with the nurse at the local sexual health clinic, coming off the depo after 3 years... she told me that even 3 years is considered "long term" use, which isn't recommended.

Most (all?) of these hormonal contraceptives work by fooling the body into thinking it is already pregnant so there is a natural urge to eat more. A pregnant woman needs an extra 200-300 calories a day on top of her normal intake. If you are not pregnant and succumb to the urge to eat, you are going to gain roughly a pound every fortnight. Eeek!

I eat every time i have an urge and even if i don't! Works wonders for me, i'm down to 9 and a half stone now. All those years i dieted too!

The implant has increased my hunger but i don't fight it. Maybe it will catch up with me one day :/

I was on depo for ten years - definitely long term use! I was about 2 stone heavier on it than when I came off - it literally dropped off me and I went from a 12 to an 8 without any effort at all. Sadly when I got PG and had my Dd three years ago I put it all back on and there it stays, but I've been pregnant a lot since then (lots of miscarriages) so my body is messed up right now.

But for me, coming off depo meant instant no-effort weight loss and it was great!
