Job Seeking in NI

I am currently on JSA and I am considering searching in Northern Ireland for work. Now to do this obviously I will have to go over to NI for a trip. I have friends over there who I can stay with.

Would I have to sign off JSA to do this as I'd still be in the UK just not in England.

You don't need to be physically in the country to search for a job as finding vacancies can be done on the internet. Applications can be submitted via the internet too, or by post. You'd only need to visit if you were called for interview. There's therefore no need for you to sign off JSA.
  • But I would however need to visit to see the area and decide if applying for work there is what I want.

So...apply for jobs, and if you get an interview make your visit then. The job market in NI is rather stagnant. If your friends are willing to accommodate you for a week or so then you'd still be able to job hunt for work in England online. If you decide to move over here while on JSA then your claim would be transferred to a local jobs & benefit office.

You might as well visit anyway, nothing ventured nothing gained. I've been unemployed since December last year, so I have a good idea about how healthy the job market here is (it's almost dead, basically) but you may well strike lucky. Just go for it if you have the means to make the trip.
  • I'm looking for teaching work. I haven't got the money to make the trip right now but I am hoping to make the trip soon. I will be really ramping up the hunt in late August.

Here's a link to the NI Job Centre job list:

    link

You could have a look at https://www.nijobs.com and https://www.recruitni.com too. There are some others but these seem to attract the most. Obviously there are agencies, but they advertise on nijobs.com and/or recruitni.com, and often don't keep their own websites up to date!

BTW the number of vacancies listed on the job centre website is 1492 - that's all vacancies in N.Ireland listed by all job centres across the country. Unemployment figures in N.Ireland are apparently "favourable" compared to the rest of the UK and Europe. However what they fail to reflect is the numbers of young people leaving and Eastern Europeans and other foreign nationals repatriating due to lack of employment here. It's depressing! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-18519465

Just seen your note about looking for teaching work. NI education is divided into a number of Education and Library Boards. Public sector jobs will be advertised on their websites:

    SELB
    WELB\
    NEELB
    BELB
    SEELB

There aren't too many teaching vacancies right now...unfortunately because there is a heavy reliance on the public sector for employment teaching is a very popular profession to choose. There is therefore a lot of competition for jobs. That doesn't mean it is impossible, far from it.

I understand from a teacher acquaintance that jobs mostly come up in the summer months (end of June, all of July, all of August, but mostly June/July) so that teachers start at the beginning of the school year. Of course that doesn't rule out maternity cover, sick cover etc etc which may arise at any time.
  • Most UK Teaching jobs for September have already gone. They started being advertised in MAy time. Iw ill keep looking! Thanks for your help
