can i reclaim the insurance cover for my mortgage???

Hi all,

i have recently started recovering PPI and was wondering can i claim it for the assurance policy that is relevant to my mortgage?

the cover was sold/recommended to me at the time by a financial advisor, it cover me for sickness and life or critical illness cover. its with a company called bright grey and they are a division of royal london.

as i understood it at the time i HAD to take this or i wouldnt have been given a mortgage, i am a firefighter and luckily we recieve full sick so i did/do not require this policy i think?

so can i claim it back like ppi? and do i need to continue with it anyway?

cheers for any answers

Critical illness cover is different to PPI. It will pay off the mortgage if you suffer a qualifying illness or total and permanent disability - regardless of any ill health benefits.
  • I had the same question Jebus: although I understand the difference between PPI and Critical Illness cover, we were basically told "sign this or no mortgage". Fair enough that they want us to have insurance cover, but surely we should be free to choose our own, not the one they demand we take?

if you can prove they said that then you will have a case
  • I was just coming on here to ask a similar question. I have a mortgage with Northern Rock and when I took it out I was told that I had to take out the Life assurance/Critical illness cover or I wouldn't be allowed the mortgage. I explained that I was covered by work but was told that it didn't matter. The payment was taken with my mortgage payment and I had no idea how to cancel it. About a year ago they split the payments and at that point I managed to cancel it.

I still have my mortgage with them so do not want to complain if it is likely I will have to leave my mortgage.

How can you prove this is what they said as it is all in a conversation in their office that is not recorded?

You usually cannot and the documentation will not support your allegation either. This is why most complaints on that reason alone will be rejected.

  • Hi. Can anyone help me. I recently called HSBC to query my MRP because I felt it was mis-sold. They logged the complaint but have taken no details off me and have told me it taked 8 weeks to process. I have never been sent a form to file my complaint. Also, should I now cancel my MRP as I am querying the mis-selling of it. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

Your query is enough for them to look into it. If it was an advised case, they will have a factfind, needs analysis and possibly a report/statement of demands and needs and those will tell them everything they need to know.

  • I took out my mortgage in 1994 and feel I was mis-sold PPI as my employer would have paid me full sick pay for at least a year. Is it too late to complain and try to reclaim.

    Who sold it to you?

MPPI didnt exist in 1994. It would have been ASU. ASU typically would pay out in addition to work sick pay. So, you may well wish to check this with the insurer first before you put a complaint in. If they say they would have paid out then you know your complaint will be rejected on that reason but if they say they wouldnt pay out then you know you have a valid complaint reason.
