I have been issued with a statutory demand from Hamptons.
It dates back to 1999. I have been chased for it and I've buried my head in the sand. I do not deny the debt buy I am unsure if the amount being chased is correct. In terms of charges etc.
It is for about £13000. I am unsure what I should do but really worried as bankruptcy is being threatened.
Please, can anyone advise accordingly?

            Hamptons Legal?
Was the demand delivered by someone or posted?
When you say it dates back to 1999, have you paid or acknowledged the debt in writing in the last 6 years? Or was there a six year period at any time during which you didn't?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

It was physically given to me. I did ring them to find out what it was about. Thru said to pay in full or 35% which works out at 4,600. They said that's all they could offer. Or they'll make me bankrupt.0

I've never responded to letters previously0

And they also said if I made an offer of a payment, they could put that forward to the litigation manager. But I think the amount they're chasing may be wrong0

So just to be clear, has there been a period of 6 years during which you haven't acknowledge the debt in writing or paid anything?
And do you know if there is a CCJ on this? I presume not?
Sounds like the debt could be statute barred, and as such you would have grounds to set the statutory demand set aside.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Ignore them, don't speak to them. The debt is more than 6 years old. Go and see your local citizens advice bureau for advice if necessary.0

They now keeping ringing me but I'm unsure whether to answer their calls.0

Should I set it aside then? I do not deny the debt but I don't think the amount chased is correct and no to my knowledge the only communication was with the one letter today0

Info on setting the demand aside in this link.

Do not ignore it and do nothing. Lowells/Hampton may well go ahead and make you bankrupt if you don't set it aside.
