PAYE Job but Working from Home - What do I need before I sign off?

I have been on Jobseekers allowance for a few years now. I went for a interview for a job where the company is based on the other side of the country, because it is work that can be done from home. The job interview went well, and they have offered me the job.
I have spoken the them on the phone about rates of pay and they have sent me a P46. I have been told when my start date is, but not how or when I will be paid. They said they would send me a contract, which they have not done yet and I am due to start in a couple of days.
I am pretty sure that means I should sign off, but I don't feel like I can on the basis of one phone call. It's not like I will be going into an office every day, so it feels very weird.
What information do I need to get from them to check that this job offer is legitimate before I sign on? Does anyone know what would happen if I were to take the job then didn't get paid, can I reclaim benefits?
What would you do? Would you wait for the contract to come before you told the Jobcentre?

How much did you pay them for this "job"?0

I have paid them nothing and I have met them in person. They are not asking me for any money either.0

I would personally wait for the contract before signing off. But the ultimate decision is yours.0

That sounds sensible to me, I think I will aim for that. However I read that legally a contract does not have to be in writing and that they don't have to give you a written summary of duties until 2 months after you start. (there is a link on the direct gov website but I can't post it).
I wasn't sure if sending back a P46 made it an official PAYE job? But I have no way of checking if they have submit it.
I was wondering if I got confirmation of the job offer via e-mail, if that is that legally binding in anyway.0
