  • Update: Logs are not kept of the chat messages and it would be unlikely that I would be entitled to the data anyway.

Going to go with one of the suggestions on here and buy some cakes/doughnuts/etc see if that wins me any friends.

I also don't see how they can say that because they were using a chat system that makes it an off the record function. i wonder if they were calling the company owner an effing you know what if that would be dismissed as a off the record function..?

    But hey, that's just me.

Face it, people have been sacked for slagging off the boss/company on Facebook (which is nowt to do with your workplace, unless you happen to work for Facebook) so they probably could be for anything using a work based system.

Thanks for the update. :) Sounds like a good game plan. Always better to try and get on with your work mates if you can. Good luck!

I think that's a good idea, but I would also seriously look into joining a union, just in case, you never know what might happen in the future, and it's always good to have a bit of support if events should take a nasty turn.

    Good luck
  • I wish you luck with you trying to ingratiate yourself with your colleagues and I hope your efforts are successful.

In the event of it not being a fruitful endeavour, you may wish to get impartial advice from ACAS who provide confidential guidance about any kind of dispute or query that you have about relationship issues within the workplace, including legal advice. The colleagues may be in violation of the Communciations Act 2003. Equally your employer has a legal Duty of Care to look after your physical and psychological well-being.

Nobody would investigate on the evidence of 'I saw my name mentioned on their screen several times'. You have to have good reason to monitor email or chat logs, or a policy of random checks - and they DO have to be random, in that case.
They don't have to be random at all. Reasonable doubt of wrong-doing is enough to commence the checks. Like if for example an employee is caught looking at naked ladies mud wrestling, they could argue it came up unexpectedly after clicking on a link to something else, but their web history (which could be stored externally) might reveal a different story.

Give them a good coating of chocolate-based laxative and leave them in the canteen (but make sure no-one knows it was you who left them). Then sit-back and have a quiet laugh as they spend all day in and out the loo.
