HELP - Late Booking Holiday Advice

Hi
I have two weeks off at the end of August and am looking to go somewhere for 7-10 day break. I would like to go somewhere in Europe (not Spain or Turkey). It will be my husband, me and our 15 year old son.
I have two queries:

1. Can you recommend somewhere for us. We are not lying by the pool/beach types of people. We wouldn’t mind a day doing this, however, excursions to places or sightseeing would be great. I suppose somewhere that has old ruins, places of interest etc. I want to feel like I am in the country I am visiting. I once took a package holiday to Salou and didn’t feel like I was even in Spain.

2.My better half feels that we would get a fantastic bargain to wait until the week we are going to go to book. I would rather book now (I am a bit of a planner). My husband thinks that we will get a super bargain if we wait until a few days before we go to book. I tend to think that the super bargain price holiday (if it exists) will be to a large resort where there is not much in the way of sightseeing etc but a holiday tailored more to lying round the pool.

By the way we want to fly from any airport in Belfast or Dublin so that again limits the options.

What do you think?

    Lake Garda,

The Northern end (Riva, Torbole) is famous for wind surfing, mountain biking and you can take lessons or hire bikes if you are interested in sporting activities.

Both Verona and Venice are also close enough for day trips. There is the open air opera in Verona which is in a Roman ampitheatre which is pretty spectacular and also the Romeo and Juliet balcony.

You can also take the ferry to other towns on the lake, Malcesine has an old castle and Limone is supposed to be very beautiful as well. If you wanted to hire a car, there are also other lakes in the mountains which may be well worth a visit.
