Had you put through the cheque bearing the single signature she could, and probably would, have countermanded it at a later date ... leaving you overdrawn and with a real problem. And all this talk of 'illegal' and 'police' and 'fraud' ...... is simply talk, it has no foundation.
But what you should have done, after obtaining the 2nd signature .. is fork out £10 - £12 and get your Bank to do a 'special presentation'. Whereby they would have posted the cheque to the company Branch and asked if it would be honoured upon presentation? If the funds were there at that point, they would be 'reserved' to meet your cheque. Doesn't get you the money faster - as it still has to go through Clearing - but provided it passed that first hurdle -little likelihood it could bounce thereafter. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
