Handing in a notice

Hi All
I have a few questions regarding handing in a notice:
Can the boss refuse to give a reference?
Do I legally need to give any reason for leaving?
Do HR keep any records or need to keep records of why I am leaving?
If I hand in my notice 30th July with a leaving date three weeks into the future, does the notice period begin on 30th, or will it begin when my company says it begins?
Is there any hidden tricks that I should watch out for, as I have never done this before?
Thanks

Hi All

Can the boss refuse to give a reference? yes
Do I legally need to give any reason for leaving? no
Do HR keep any records or need to keep records of why I am leaving? maybe keep records, you can ask for a copy of the details they keep on you.
If I hand in my notice 30th July with a leaving date three weeks into the future, does the notice period begin on 30th, or will it begin when my company says it begins? 30th, you tell them, they don't tell you.
Thanks
Is there any hidden tricks that I should watch out for?no, just keep a record of who you give the notice to and maybe a copy, make sure you get your holiday pay etc
Hope that helps.0 -

Hidden tricks? Yes the notice in your contract - it may not be 3 weeks you have to give. Check there first.0 -

Your notice period would then be from 31st July. It starts the day after you hand in your notice, whatever time of day you do it.0 -
Check the contractual notice.
Subject to contractual restrictions
One trick, you have, is to book outstanding holidays and not leave enough time for the employer to reject them once approved.
The employer can schedule outstanding accrued holidays to fall within hte notice.
Employer can put you on garden leave.
They may offer PILON and terminate immediately0 -
PILON sounds odd, not sure of the ins and outs of that. Fron what I have read I get paid with no further obligation tax free for a month.
Does that sound correct? I check my contract there is provision for this there but i think it is just in the case of a redundancy.
Should I offer this option ?0 -
IF YOU resign you do not get payment in lieu of notice, you work your notice.PILON sounds odd, not sure of the ins and outs of that. Fron what I have read I get paid with no further obligation tax free for a month.

Not your choice.
If it is in your contract it will be taxable and if not it can be paid net of taxes anyway.0
