My sons both have significant birthdays coming up and both have expressed a desire to have a kilt!

I appreciate that these are expensive but given the times that I have had to pay for hire in the last few years I expect they will pay for themselves.

So, given the expense, I am looking for recommendations of any kilt makers, please. I will only be getting the kilt initially as both have chopped and chaged their minds over the jacket or shirt they wish to wear.

Even if someone can advise what weights I should be looking for and any rough guide as to the cost.

TIA

PS. I know it would be very MSE to get ex hire kilts etc but not really what I want.

  • I went to Scots the Kiltmaker 3 years ago - very pleased with the end result but the whole outfit cost 1000 pounds - including jacket, sporran etc Need to go for a heavy weight kilt for it to hang right. We bought if for his graduation present but he has used it so many times it will pay for itself - he is actually wearing it today for a wedding. Worth just getting the kilt - as you say they can chop and change shirts etc to make it casual

If you are near Fife or Stirling, Kingdom Kilts has a good reputation.

A couple of years ago, my mate and I were hunting for kilts for his wedding.

I ended up renting, but he bought his from a kilt maker on the royal mile.

Geoffrey kiltmaker I think (looking at google street view).

He was about 1k all in for the full highland dress, the guy even did a fitting down in London for him!

OH wears kilts a lot. For a good Kilt he says a 16 oz cloth. He likes Geoffrey Taylor, their kilts are very well made (he had one with the military stipe done extremely well with a sutiable number of pleats). Some cheaper ones will be ligher kateiral and have fewer pleats. He has had some for years amd they look at good as new, with a lot of wear. They are not cheap, but you do get the quailty.
  • There's a kilt maker in Abernethy, who made my outfit. Well made and excellent value. Caledonia Highland Dress. No connection with them at all other than as stated.

    Hi,

No connection other than as a customer, but would recommend Caledonian Kilts in Glenrothes.

McKay's in Renfrew are excellent, pricey but good.
For sporrans &c. try McCrosties in Howwood, home made leather goods to measure.

    Regards,

There is a lady near Longniddry who makes kilts - she has made one for the Sultan of Brunei! If you want details please send me a pm.
