I can only comment on canned foods, I come across a fair amount of it in my job (house clearance). Over three years, I have only come across one can which did not come up to expectations and that was a can of lager out of a pack of twenty four. This obviously did not reach the parts that other beers did.
My colleagues regard me as a weirdo but they still give me any tins that they find saying that they would not eat it. Usually the comment is, "You won't eat this, it's still in date".
Last month I savoured a 3 year old 12 pack of Walkers crisps, still perfectly crisp !
My tea tonight was a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie, one of three which I came across today. The vintage alas is unknown as the fourth figure of the year on the bottom of the tin is unreadable, the first three however are 199 . My other find today was a five litre draught keg of Heineken. If only there was something decent on the T.V. that I could watch whilst drinking it.0 -
I'm a bit fussy with use-by dates when it comes to meat, fish and dairy but sometime ago on MSE i found a great post-cant for the life of me find it now for a link-and it really does work!!
Take your 'gone-off' milk and leave in the sun to separate.
Strain through muslin cloth and leave overnight to drain-i leave mine sat in a sieve over a pan in the sink.
It will be the texture of mascapone.Throw away the liquid.
You can flavour it to taste using:salt, black pepper, chives, parsley, garlic, chilli flakes-the base is a very mild flavour.
You can use it as a spread or in recipes like cheesecake or salmon pate but do use quickly!!:T
Also when hard cheese starts approaching its 'good-bye' date i grate it into freezer bags and use to top dishes before cooking!Emergency Savings #73 = £1,500/£2,000
Savings Pot £1,440.00
Xmas 2018=£100/£300 Australia =£0.00/60000 -
Like the majority I also never take notice of sell by/use by etc, if it looks ok, smells ok then its ok for me.
I have scraped mould off pesto,. jam, cheese and even bread in an emergency and I reheat rice, I'm still here to tell the tale.
I don't think you should be soft about these things, a little common sense and initiative goes a long way. Though I have cooked mince on the turn thinking it would 'be ok' lol, but it just stank and cleaerly wasn't.
I'm so glad my O/H is like that too after reading some of the posts on here about O/H not 'getting it'Actually he's worse than me, he eats all those nasty smelly cheeses when they have mould on top of mould, it knocks me sick.
Just because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right0 -
I am really horrified by the stupidity of some of these posters.0

If it looks ok, smells ok and tastes ok, I eat it!

I'm with you KatieClampet. However I stopped my husband from using a 2004 jar of lemon curd. The 2006 one smelt more lemony.0

Like everyone else; smell it & look at it.
I was alive well before these sell-by dates came into being, and what does everybody think we had to do BEFORE these daft 'health & safety' labels came into being?
I love reading about true survival stories; peeps who've been lost in the jungles/deserts etc for weeks for example.
If I see a food item's S.B.D. has expired I often ask myself thus;
'If I'd come across this after 7 days starving in a remote location, would I say to myself; ''Oh, can't eat that, the sell by date has expired!'', or would I try it anyway''...
..I think the answer is obvious.0 -

Surely by the time you've drunk the 5 litres you won't care if it's a decent programme or not anyway! :rotfl: If it was me I'd be finished after 1/2 a litre0
