What constitutes a 'purchase' for 0% purchases?

We are thinking of applying for a 0% purchase credit card to buy a new boiler. However, when speaking to my existing bank I remember he said "for RETAIL purchases". I didn't think about it at the time, but what constitutes a retail purchase and would our purchase from British Gas come under the 0% purchase banner. Thanks!

A purchase of a boiler using the card counts as a purchase. If you were to go to the cashpoint withdraw the cash then use the cash to buy the boiler then that isn't a purchase.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

British Gas would certainly be a retail purchase

I'm less certain what would happen if you bought it from a wholesale outlet like say Travis Perkins whose main business is with tradesmen - and some of whom would be reluctant to deal direct with you anyway

    You'll be fine

    Goods & services are purchases.
Foreign currency and credit for gambling sites and obviously cash out of an ATM count as cash advances.
Usually vouchers count as purchases although have almost lost some money on a Peacocks voucher, I'm not so keen on buying vouchers anymore.

Purchase is basically anything that isn't a balance transfer or cash transaction (withdrawal, purchase of foreign currency, wire transfer (like western union) or gambling).

Things like council tax and water rates are also purchases. Also, PayPal is classed as a purchase, but you don't get s75 protection when using PayPal as the Service covered by s75 would be PayPal providing the funds transfer, rather than the goods or services purchased.
