    From memory, personal pension mortgages were simply personal pensions where 25% of the fund would be taken as tax free cash which would be used to pay the mortgage.

    I don't think that this would alter any of the questions that would need to be asked. Except possibly add:

    5) Have any benefits (pension or tax free cash) ever been paid out from the plan.

    Legacy personal pensions usually lapsed with no value if you stopped paying them in the first two years. After that, you would expect a value to be on there even if it very small.

    The reason they lapse is because the high charges (which are front-end loaded) eat away the value.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)
