    Tue - rice and dahl

Wed - sweet and sour pork with rice

Thurs - pasta with bacon & veg tomatoey sauce

Fri - turkey drummers, chips and sweetcorn (I'm such a kid)

    Sat - curry and rice

Sun - not sure what we're doing this day yet, might do spaghetti in spicy tomato sauce depending.

Sorry this is a 2 week plan but I had planned meals to then use leftovers, attempting a couple of new recipes and things like the mushroom soup will be made this week to use some mushrooms up that will get wasted if not used up.

I am dead chuffed with my plan, just need to stick to it and not get down hearted if DH turns his nose up:D

    Pay off £7000 - £1743 - 19.4%

Question for all you great cooks - how does one cook steak?? Ive only recently started eating meat after a lifetime of vegetarianism, so am playing catch up!

I'm looking for recipes on-line but they seem to differ massively - any favourites to pass along?

It really is personal taste. I like mine still mooing almost yet my husband likes his cremated.
Play around with it until you find how you like it. I love mine with garlic butter and a pinch of chilli flakes. :D

We do ours very simply on our griddle pan (medium-rare when we've bought it from the butchers) 2-3 mins on each side. It was to be red hot and smoking before you put the steak on...and only flip it once.:)

I'm sure I had done my plan for this week, but maybe not! Here is the plan, admittedly somethings have been tweaked!

Mo july 30 chicken, pancetta, mushroom and spinach pasta (forgot the pancetta!)
Tu july 31 chicken, chorizo and broad bean rice
We aug 1 smoked cod/haddock florentine, crushed new spuds
Th aug 2 spaghetti carbonara with peas (OH is out, I may still do this, or just a roasted tomato and pancetta sauce)
Fr aug 3 chicken piri piri with rice
Sa aug 4 greek lamb chops, onion salad, corn on the cob
Su aug 5 ham hock, new potatoes, peas, mustard sauce

I like rump steak, or rib eye. Ideally about 2cm thick. Let it come to room temperature before you cook it (30-60minutes depending on how big a bit it is)

I like my steak RARE (I only buy good steak, from a butcher, that has been properly hung, not supermarket stuff, which I find tough, even if a premium one)

Heat a frying pan, cast iron griddle, BBQ until VERY hot. Rub steak with oil, season with salt and pepper.

Put steak on pan, press down, and leave it. For 60-90 seconds. Flip it, and do the same. (see here for ways to test with the feel However-the pics are misleading-it is the fleshy part on your palm that you are feeling, not the top of your hand)
Remove from pan, rest for 5 minutes (i deglaze the pan with some red wine, or sherry, bubble it down, then pour over the steak) I also use this 5 minutes to boil my green beans, and serve up my dauphinoise (creatures of habit when we have steak, it is only about every 2-3months though!)

If you like it more done than rare, an extra 15-30s will give you medium rare, and 30-60s medium. I refuse to believe people like a good steak well done :D
