Did anyone panic about not finding a dress?

I haven't actually tried any yet (first appointment is tomorrow morning
then another shop next Saturday) but I think I know I want a dress just under knee length and not strapless as I feel my shoulders are quite broad. From looking at many shops websites the vast majority of dresses at the moment seem to be floor length and strapless.
So, now I'm worrying I won't find anything I like! Anyone else been in this position?

Actually finding the dress was perhaps one of the biggest worries and the thing I was not looking forward to when we got married....
what I will say is even though you think you have an idea of what you want, try different styles on too...I had a very clear picture of what I though would suit me and I even took the pic to a few shops...then I started trying on different things and suddenly it all fell into place....and what I eventually ended up with was about as far removed from my "ideal" dress as possible...but it was so me!
Dont discount something on the hanger it will look totally different on....and if things need to be altered then its perfectly possible to alter the length of dresses from long to short if you really cant find what you are afterfrugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

I was absolutely DREADING dress shopping. I am under 5 foot, carrying far too much extra weight after being on medication that made me gain weight like crazy, and i buy ALL my clothes online - i never ever ever try clothes on in shops!
So as you can imagine, wedding dress shopping was a huge nightmate...however, i ended up finding my dress on the first try, when we were bridesmaid dress shopping and I hadn't even really intended to try any dresses on. I tried on about 4 or 5 dresses, found one that I didn't want to take off and that made my mum and best friend cry, and was pretty pleased to leave it at that! It was nowhere near as bad as I expected.
I also have broad shoulders and fat upper arms (hate them) and was worried about strapless, but the dress I fell in love with is strapless and it somehow makes me look narrower and slimmer, I have no idea how. But the shop are going to make me some off-the-shoulder detachable strap type things that I can wear at least for the ceremony and the pictures to hide my arms if I feel self conscious, so there are options.0 -
Sorry posted that too soon...meant to add, try not to dread it too much, have fun! Maybe ring round shops to see if they have any shorter dresses, but don't write off long dresses until you've at least tried some on. There are other options too - MrsDrink got a full length dress shortened to the length she wanted, so you can do that too!
Good luck!0 -
Hello ladies, thanks so much for your encouragement. It turns out I had nothing to worry about
. Went to the shop this morning with my mum and picked out the dresses I wanted to try (which were all long and primarily strapless), the lady told me they could all be made shorter, straps added etc which made me feel better.
Anyway, the first one I tried on was one they'd had in the window and was one of the reasons I picked the shop and I LOVED IT! I tried 9 on in total and I liked 3 others but the first one was just beautiful
. It has one strap (never thought I'd have gone for asymetrical) and floor length with a small train (about 1 metre long I'd say). So really not what I thought I'd like!
I will still keep my appointment with the other shop next Saturday but I can't imagine I'll find anything more than this one
.
I'd love to hear any more stories about how well things worked out for people though if you're willing to share

I can't share any stories of my own about brilliant dress shopping, but I will share my sister's.
She went in knowing what she wanted, and my mum picked out something with quite a few beads etc, when she was certain she wanted plain. Anyway, tried it on first, then tried loads of others, and just couldn't get passed the first one.
She went to another shop a week later, and tried on loads, finally finding one that she loved, and knew was the dress for her (hard to get her to take it off). Turned out to be the exact same dress as in the other shop, but about £100 cheaper

Proof it was the right one, and MSE as well! Have you started your shopping yet? Or any idea of what you think you might like?0
